A tragedy.
A world too stubborn to understand.
A tormented artist.
A spiritual journey.
All of these, a smorgasbord of stories, entangled and intertwined, are concealed within a track of 1 minute and 9 seconds.
Meeting Place, composed by A.R. Rahman, written by Irshad Kamil (inspired by a Rumi poem), and voiced by Ranbir Kapoor, is a short track from the movie Rockstar.
The melody itself is short and simple, but plaintive. It follows the common musical scheme threaded through the rest of the album – but a more melancholic and dream-like version of it. The contiguity of sound and silence is masterfully done.
“Pata hai…
Yahaan se bahut door, ghalat aur sahi ke paar,
Ek maidan hai, main wahaan milunga tujhe.”
“Did you know…
Far from here, out beyond our ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing, There is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
– Rumi
I’m not sure why, but I find the music and lyrics in this particular piece so incredibly compelling – perhaps because I have watched the movie and spent many a night ruminating over it.
This piece always stirs something in my heart. A restless feeling, as if it were I living in that movie and not Jordan’s character.
Yours truly,
Divi
